Training and Education

  • Received his medical degree from Jefferson University Medical School, Philadelphia, PA 1967.
  • Completed his general surgery internship and residency at UCLA, 1967-1969.
  • Completed his orthopaedic residency at Columbia University, New York, NY 1972.
  • Earned the distinction of becoming Board Certified in Orthopaedic Surgery, 1973.
  • Member of North American and International Arthroscopy Associations; the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine; the California Medical Association; the Orange County Medical Association.
  • Founding Member of the Arthroscopic Shoulder Surgeons Society.
  • Certified by the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine (ISAKOS); American College of Sports Medicine; and the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine.
  • Was appointed clinical instructor in orthopaedic surgery at UC Irvine, 1976-1986.
  • Has been on attending staff at Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian, Newport Beach, since 1978.
  • Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons.
  • Has written numerous papers on knees and shoulder problems, diagnosis, and treatment.

Dr. Ralph Venuto

Ralph J. Venuto, M.D., F.A.C.S, is a leading specialist in the treatment of disorders of the knee and shoulder, including arthroscopy, ligament reconstruction, and many techniques he personally designed and developed.

He has been recognized as an innovative surgeon who has mastered safe, proven technological breakthroughs. He was the first surgeon in Southern California to perform the effective Carticel Implant Surgery (ACI), where he used a patient’s healthy cells to repair cartilage defects.

Dr. Venuto was one of the first surgeons in the country to perform arthroscopic surgery, in which a straw-like tube with a fiber-optic camera is used to see inside joints and treat specific areas without adding trauma or scarring. Since 1974, he has successfully performed more than 10,000 arthroscopies, allowing his patients to experience quicker recovery of faster healing, and less pain.

As a recognized expert in sports medicine, he has treated many top college and professional athletes, including, among others, NBA superstar Karl Malone. Dr. Venuto was the Chief Medical Officer for the wrestling teams at the 1984 Olympic Games, and has served as a team physician at the high school, college and professional levels. He is also committed to community involvement. He supports local charities and has been an invited speaker at organizations in the U.S. and abroad, lecturing on the prevention and care of orthopaedic injuries and on the latest techniques in orthopaedic surgery.

Dr. Venuto has been named one of the best doctors in Orange County in Orange Coast Magazine’s “The Doctor’s Doctor”. When more than 5,000 physicians were asked to recommend the specialists they would “consider most desirable to care for a loved one, ” Dr. Venuto was recognized by his peers as one of the county's most respected Top Doctors.
